Localism - An Opportunity

The Localism Act received Royal Assent in November 2011

Community engagement in the planning process is increasingly important, not least in light of the Localism Act. This will take planning policy in a new direction and place community relations at the heart of the development agenda. The details of the requirements for pre-application consultation are expected in Spring 2012.

It is important that developers build productive relationships with key local decision makers and the local community, both on sites where a planning application is envisaged and strategic sites where there is a long-term interest in the local area.

The shift to localism in the planning system provides an opportunity to work with local people to create new developments, that are welcomed by residents, breaking down the traditional stereotypes that often exist on both sides.
